Labour’s utter contempt for residents was on full display at the 20th October Extraordinary Council Meeting requested by Conservative Councillors to discuss Low Traffic Neighbourhood schemes (LTN’s) and a No Confidence Vote in Cllr Julian Bell, Leader of the Council where Labour Councillors unanimously voted in favour of keeping both LTN’s and their embattled Leader.
This comes despite over 10,000 residents signing a petition objecting to the proposed plans for Ealing LTNs and the Labour Councillors themselves bringing a vote of no confidence in their leader, Cllr Bell less than 3 weeks ago.
Cllr Greg Stafford, Opposition Leader said:
“Labour’s contempt and arrogance was on full display with their insistence that in 9 months when the LTN’s will be reviewed residents will love them and that they intend to vigorously defend all challenges to the LTN’s. These are clear indications that Labour has no intention of listening and that the 10,000 residents who signed a petition need not have bothered.
Furthermore, less than 3 weeks ago, the Labour Councillors themselves raised a no-confidence vote in the Leader of the Council in which 27 members voted for his removal. Yet, not even one of those Councillors who was prepared to stab Cllr Bell in the dark, would do so publicly. Instead, they all chose to sacrifice their principles to protect their privileged positions knowing full well, that the Leader of the Council’s perceived pro-development stance and personal character does not resonate with Ealing residents.”
Cllr Seema Kumar said:
“27 Labour Councillors also had no confidence in Julian Bell, Leader of the Council and as the expression goes, from your lips to God's ears we requested an Extraordinary Council Meeting to enable all Councillors to have this important discussion and vote in public.
Cllr Bell holds a very privileged position and with that comes the expectation that he leads accordingly. Every decision he makes impacts our large and diverse community. His pro-development; anti-car; two houses and non-bill paying stance displays a level of arrogance and entitlement that does not serve Ealing residents.
For the Labour Councillors to continue to publicly support Cllr Bell whilst privately decrying him is the worst form of cowardice, which also, unfortunately, extends to their position on the LTN’s. Privately, they claim to be on the side of residents, but when tested publicly, they voted for the LTN’s to remain
