Theft of Catalytic Converters

The Metropolitan Police have reported that the theft of catalytic converters in London for the first six months of 2019, at 2,894,  is approaching double that for the whole of 2018 almost certainly due to the price of precious metals skyrocketing, a nationwide problem.  This is born out by a number of catalytic converter thefts reported in Perivale recently, some in broad daylight and even one from a car parked in the Tesco car park at 3pm.  According to the Met hybrid cars are particularly targeted because the catalytic converter is used less as the cars have lower emissions.  Police advice on precautions that can be taken are:

  • Mark catalytic converters with a serial number to make it distinctive
  • Place a protective covering over the catalytic converter
  • Install CCTV and alarms
  • Park vehicles so as to prevent access underneath
